The ASPCA or The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded way back in 1866 by Henry Bergh with the aim to provide effective means in preventing animal cruelty across the USA and North America. It was the first of its kind on the continent and remains one of the largest humane societies in the entire world. They are a privately funded – not for profit – organization based out of New York and offer a range of pet insurance plans for pet owners in the United States.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program offers Complete Coverage℠ for your pets, giving you peace of mind that almost all potential health conditions are covered in one plan. However, there are a few caveats that should be noted. Pre-existing medical conditions are not included in their coverage as well as preventative and cosmetic procedures, though this is a fairly standard procedure in the pet insurance industry.

One noteworthy inclusion in the Complete Coverage is the exam fees. These are present on almost every veterinary bill, so having this as part of your pet insurance plan will certainly provide value for money. The process is simple to set up and can all be done using their online form. Once set up, pet owners can receive up to a 90% reimbursement for their costs.

Application & Approval Process

To apply for pet insurance with the ASPCA, you have to visit their dedicated pet insurance website and follow the steps. This 100% online process will navigate you through to your free quotation and will provide a full list of the items that are covered in the plans.

The default option that you are offered is the Complete Coverage, which is a full and comprehensive plan covering a wide range of health concerns. But if you prefer, you can opt for a less extensive insurance by taking out the Accident-Only Coverage. This will only insure your pet in the event of them being injured.

To start your application, visit the ASPCA insurance website and enter your pet’s details into the box. Here, you will be asked whether you want to insure a cat or a dog, your pet’s name and your zip code.

Next, the application form will navigate you to a page that asks for your pet’s exact breed, gender, and age. Please note that the minimum age for coverage is eight weeks.

Once you have completed this stage, the next section will detail your suggested plan and will show you how much it will cost. As the Complete Coverage is a comprehensive pet insurance plan, it can often come at a higher price than some of its competitors. However, customers are offered the option to customize their plans to suit their budget. 

If you want to lower the premium, then you can fully customize your plan on this page. Reducing the annual limit, level of reimbursement, and the annual deductible will decrease the monthly premium.

You can add preventative care to your plan at this stage for a low monthly cost.

Premiums & Deductibles

Both the Complete Coverage plan and the Accident-Only coverage are fully customizable when it comes to the premium and additional add-ons.

There are three choices for deductibles with each plan. These are $500, $250, and $100. This deductible only needs to be paid once in a 12-month period.

If you would like to add preventative care to your plans, you can do so for $9.95 per month for the basic or $24.95 for the prime. If you have any more pets to add then you can do so here. You will save 10% on the base plan premium for every pet that you enroll.

Premium payments can be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. 

Plan Options & Coverage

As mentioned, there are two main coverage plans that customers can choose from. 

Accident-Only coverage starts from as little as $19.95 per month, where the Complete Coverage begins from around $40 per month. This varies depending on the breed and age of your pet.

The Complete Coverage does not have any lifetime or upper age limits, nor does it have per-incident limits. However, there is an annual limit that must be taken into consideration. This is customizable by the customer in the application process, allowing the choice between $3,000, $5,000, $7,000, and $10,000. The higher the annual limit, the higher the premium.

For both plans, all pets must be at least 8 weeks old, and there is no upper age limit to worry about. 

Claim Process

The claim process is very straightforward with ASPCA. Simply visit the member area on the website and fill in the online claim form. Alternatively, you can print out the form and send it via email, fax, or mail.

It typically takes around 30 days for a claim to be processed and reimbursed.

Extras & Customer Support

The member’s area provides you access to all the tools you need for submitting claims and account management. It also acts as a customer community where you can ask questions and find helpful information on pet health and safety, as well as expert veterinary advice. Unfortunately, there seem to be no pet wellness rewards at this moment in time. 

There are four methods available to get in touch with the customer support team at the ASPCA. While the opening times for the support team are not visible on the company website, we assume that they operate during the same time as the sales team who are available 6 days a week from 8 AM to 9 PM (EST) Monday to Friday, and 9 AM to 5 PM (EST) on Saturdays.
