About Figo

Founded in 2013 and based in Chicago, Figo Pet Insurance operates as a software development company providing cloud-based health insurance plans for cats and dogs. Users can get a quote or submit claims using their mobile devices through the Figo app and get reimbursed digitally. Figo is specifically available for cats and dogs, only covering unexpected illnesses and injuries. There are three plans to choose from which can be customized to meet your budget and it can be used at any licensed veterinary practice, specialist or emergency hospital in the States, Canada or Puerto Rico.

Application & Approval Process

You can start your application process by getting a quote. When you click on “Get a Quote” on Figo’s website, it will redirect you to a basic form. Enter the necessary details such as:

  • Pet’s name
  • Pet type (dog or cat)
  • Pet’s Gender
  • Pet’s Age
  • Pet’s Breed
  • Zip code of where you are currently residing
  • Email address

You also have the option to enter a promocode to receive a discount on your pet insurance before continuing to get a quote. 

Upon completing the information and proceeding to the next step, you will be redirected to a customized plan page with three options: Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. The quotes you get for these plans are based on the information provided earlier, using smart algorithms. 

You can customize your plan by adjusting the reimbursement and deductible slider according to your needs. You are also able to upgrade your coverage by adding extras like rehabilitation and veterinary exam fees for accident and illness visits. Once you’re done tailoring your plan, you have the option to add another pet, email your quote or continue with the application.

As you continue with the application, further information is required for approval purposes. The details needed are as follows:

  • Account type (Checking or Savings)
  • Routing number
  • Account number

Upon providing the details, select your preferred veterinarian near you and create your Pet Cloud account. At the end of the page, a summary of the insurance cost breakdown is listed for the applicants to view, confirm and make the purchase. You will be charged from your effective policy date which is usually a day after you complete your purchase. However, do note that you cannot immediately start using your insurance since there is a 3-day waiting period for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and 6 month waiting period for knee conditions. 

Premiums & Deductibles

Premiums are calculated according to your pet’s age, breed and location; therefore, it will vary per applicant. You can add extra options like rehabilitation and veterinary exam fees for accident and illness visits.

Figo offers a variety of deductible options like $100, $200, $500, $750, $1,000 and $1,500 as well as reimbursement selections of 60%, 65%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. Note that these options may vary according to the state you are residing in. 

Plan Options & Coverage

There are three plan options offered by Figo.

The Essential Plan covers up to $350 for chiropractic and acupuncture, up to $5,000 annual veterinary benefits and up to $100,000 of lifetime maximum benefit.

The Preferred Plan covers up to $600 for chiropractic and acupuncture, up to $10,000 annual veterinary benefits and up to $150,000 of lifetime maximum benefit.

The Ultimate Plan covers up to $1,000 for chiropractic and acupuncture, no limits on annual veterinary benefits and no limits on lifetime maximum benefit.

All of the plans cover the following:

  • New illnesses and accidents
  • Diagnostic tests related to illnesses/accidents
  • Prescription medications
  • Surgeries
  • Prosthetics
  • Chronic conditions
  • Emergency services
  • Advanced treatments and more

There are no per incident cap on claims and no upper age limits on pets. However, when renewing a policy for a dog that is 8 years or older or for a cat that is 10 years or older, Figo recommends that you follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding senior wellness testing as it helps with assessing your insurance premium.

Unfortunately, there are a few certain conditions that are not covered by Figo insurance:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Routine wellness or preventive care
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Non-accidental dental cleanings or procedures
  • Prescription food

Claim Process

There is no need for pre-authorization for veterinary needs. However, if you’re unsure whether a treatment is covered by Figo, you can email them an estimate of treatment costs and your pet’s medical details. Pre-approval reviews can take between 5 to 7 business days.

Filing a claim is easy and done electronically. Simply log in to your Figo Pet Cloud account and select the “Claims” option. Answer the online questions available, upload a copy of the paid invoice and click “Submit”. You are also required to ask your veterinarian to forward Figo your pet’s medical records as this helps in assessing the claim. A veterinarian can provide the last 2 years of medical history directly to your Pet Cloud using your Personal Pet Cloud email address. Alternatively, you can complete the form and send it via email with the paid invoice and medical records. 

Figo will process your claim within 30 days of receiving the request. However, the company is working towards shortening the wait period within 7 to 10 business days. You can choose to receive payments directly into your bank account (takes 3 to 5 business days) or have Figo send over a check to your residence (takes 7 to 10 business days) upon completion.

Extras & Customer Support

The Figo Pet Cloud application is one of the greatest benefits provided by the company. With the app, you find out who is around you and get connected by chatting, sharing photos, planning play dates, etc. Use the Explore feature to find pet-friendly places and services. The app also sends you reminders for your pet’s appointments, their birthdays and more. There is a 24/7 live vet chat option that allows users direct access to a licensed veterinary professional anytime, anywhere within seconds.

You can contact customer support through phone, text, fax or email from 8 AM to 7 PM Monday to Friday and 8 AM to 6 PM on Saturdays. They also have text support available between 11 AM to 3 PM every Sunday. Alternatively, you can utilize the live chat option on Figo’s website which is available during business hours of 8 AM to 6 PM Monday to Friday. The company is active on a number of social media platforms, giving you the option of contacting an agent through there, too. 

Figo Pet Insurance website features an extensive FAQ section addressing issues related to policy basics, administration, billings and claims to legal and renewals. There is also a blog which provides you with additional information on current trends related to pets, health, lifestyle, trainings, and pet stories.
