Healthy Paws Review - Pet Insurance
About Healthy Paws
Steve Siadek and Rob Jackson established Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation in 2009 with the aim of helping customers’ dogs and cats live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. The company was behind the first pet insurance iPhone app and it has led the way with numerous innovations, such as abolishing traditional claim forms and making it easier to manage the policy online. It was rated the best pet insurance company in 2017, 2018 and 2019 by a number of review sites. Application & Approval Process
Applying for a Healthy Paws insurance plan is straightforward, and it takes just a few minutes to get a free quote. Customers must first fill in a simple form with basic information such as whether they are applying for a dog or a cat, a male or female, the weight and breed of the pet, the pet’s birthday, and the owner’s zip code and email address.
Applicants are then shown a quote for the most popular plan, but pet owners have the freedom to customize options such as the reimbursement percentage and the deductible. Impressively, at this stage of the process, Healthy Paws will recommend other insurance companies if they feel that they are not able to offer the best value plan for a pet.
The next screen contains details about when the coverage begins and the waiting times. Applicants will then be asked to confirm if their pet has had a vet exam within the last 12 months. Pets that are younger than 6 years are required to have had an exam in the 12 months prior to enrollment. If necessary, a pet must have a checkup within 15 days of enrollment for the policy to take effect.
Applicants are then requested to provide further details about the owner, including full name and address, before agreeing to the terms and conditions. The final stage is to supply payment details and enroll.
Premiums & Deductibles
The premiums at Healthy Paws are determined by a number of factors including the pet’s age, breed, and weight, as well as where the customer lives and the chosen annual deductible and reimbursement percentage. The reimbursement and deductibles on offer differ depending on the type and age of the pet. The reimbursement options include 70%, 80% or 90% while the deductible options include $100, $250 or $500. Getting an exact quote for a pet is free and takes very little time, and this is the best way to find the premium.
Healthy Paws offers a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee and there are various discounts available. They offer employee discounts through employers’ voluntary benefits programs and there are a number of special discounts available through membership organizations, such as AAA and AMAC.
Plan Options & Coverage
Healthy Paws has just one plan that is extremely comprehensive. It is possible to visit any licensed veterinarian with Healthy Paws’ insurance and the reimbursement is for the cost of the actual vet bill rather than a predefined amount. Importantly, there are no maximum limits on payouts, and no per incident, annual or lifetime caps. The plans start as low as $15 for cats and $20 for dogs.
The Healthy Paws plan covers illnesses, accidents, hereditary conditions, congenital conditions, chronic conditions, cancer, diagnostic treatment, x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medications, emergency care, specialty care, and alternative treatment. In other words, it covers almost all of a pet’s healthcare needs.
The plan does not cover pre-existing conditions or examination fees. Furthermore, there is a bilateral exclusion on pre-existing cruciate ligament injuries. If the cruciate ligament on one leg is injured prior to enrollment or during the 15-day waiting period, then the cruciate ligament on the other leg is excluded from coverage. Preventative care and wellness such as vaccinations, flea control, nail trim and grooming are not covered, nor is dental health care, unless there is an injury to teeth caused by an accident. However, it is rare to find these covered by pet insurance companies.
It is very easy to submit a claim to Healthy Paws. All applicants have to do is submit the veterinary paid invoice through the online Customer Center, the mobile application, email or fax. There is no need to fill in a claims form, customers would simply need to take a photo of the invoice and submit it using one of the aforementioned methods. When making a claim for the first time, customers need to send the pet’s complete medical records.
The claims process is very fast and the majority are processed within 10 days. Following processing, reimbursement usually takes no more than 10 business days. It can take up to 10 days for mailed checks to arrive and direct deposits can take between 48 hours and 10 days.
Applicants who are unable to pay a vet at the time of treatment can contact Healthy Paws and they will work with the veterinary hospital to expedite access to the pet’s medical records and the processing of the claim.
Extras & Customer Support
Healthy Paws does a huge amount of work to help homeless pets. It provides grants to help fund medicine, food, shelter, and operating costs and so far, the company has donated close to $1 million. The Every Quote Gives Hope program sees a donation made towards a homeless pet’s care with every free pet insurance quote requested online. The company also donates a further $25 to non-profit animal rescue and shelters when existing customers refer a friend.
There is an excellent FAQ section on the Healthy Paws website that covers many aspects of their service, such as which vets are eligible, the treatments that are covered, and how to make claims. It is a fantastic resource and it is very much worth visiting to find information or answers to specific questions. Those who need additional help can contact the customer support team via telephone or email. They are available from 6 AM to 6 PM (PST) on Monday to Friday and from 8 AM to 5 PM (PST) on Saturday and Sunday. The website is also home to a Pet Care Blog with many articles that owners of dogs or cats are sure to find helpful.
