About Nationwide

Founded in 1980, Nationwide Pet Insurance (formerly known as, Veterinary Pet Insurance Services) is the most popular pet insurer in the United States. They currently have 600,000 pets insured for medical conditions, illnesses, wellness care, accidents, and injuries. What sets Nationwide apart from the competition is their cover of animals other than just cats and dogs. 

Customers are given a choice from four plans, each with varying levels of coverage, these are; Major Medical, Major Medical with Wellness, Whole Pet, and Whole Pet with Wellness. However, the options that you are presented will vary depending on the type of animal you are insuring and their age. They are not a part of any veterinary networks, so you can visit your regular vet if you wish to do so. In fact, you can use any vet anywhere, this includes specialists and emergency providers.

There is limited coverage for hereditary conditions, meaning that certain breed-specific conditions and any problems caused by those common traits might not be covered in the policy.

Application & Approval Process

To receive your quote and start your application, visit Nationwide’s website and click on “Start your Research.” You cannot receive an online quote for exotic pets. Customers should use the toll-free phone number for information regarding any pets other than cats and dogs. 

For the online application, you will need to provide your pet’s basic information, such as:

  • Pet’s name
  • Pet’s type
  • Pet’s breed
  • Pet’s age
  • Zip code
  • Email address
  • Whether the pet is purebred or mixed

Afterward, click the “Get a Quote” button and proceed to your pet’s personalized quotation.

The next screen will display a full range of policy options that are available to your pet. Bear in mind that while Nationwide offers 4 different policies, you will likely only see 2 or 3 choices. This is because the level of coverage available to each pet varies depending on their breed and age.

Nationwide’s policies are not as customizable as some of their competitors; however, you can alter the level of reimbursement between 90%, 70%, and 50% on the Whole Pet with Wellness policy only. Each policy comes with a $250 deductible that cannot be changed. If you wish to customize this, then you must speak to a customer service advisor for a more specific quote.

Once you have chosen your desired level of coverage, you can add on any addition pets and receive a 5% discount per pet.

Upon clicking “Next”, you will be will required to share more details about your pet, such as:

  • Pet’s color
  • Pet’s gender
  • Whether they are spayed or neutered
  • Duration of how long you’ve owned your pet
  • Medical and surgical history

After you have entered this information and paid for your policy, the process is complete. Policies go into effect 14 days from when enrollment application is approved and payment is received.

Premiums & Deductibles

Plans starting from $35 per month for cats and dogs, which doesn’t make them the cheapest option on the market. However, the level of basic coverage that you get is much higher than most of the standard plans that other pet insurance providers offer. As mentioned, there are some notable inclusions to their policies, such as cruciate ligament injuries that make their policies valuable if your pet is prone to such injuries.

All of the plans from Nationwide have a single annual deductible that you only have to pay once within 12 months. 

There are multi-pet discounts available, and you can also save 5% if you are an existing Nationwide member.

The deductible on each plan is $250 and cannot be changed using the online application form. Call the team directly if you wish to negotiate this feature on the policy.

Plan Options & Coverage

These are the plans available at Nationwide:

Major Medical is the cheapest (or most “affordable”) plan covering accidents, illnesses, cancer, some hereditary conditions, and the 24/7 vet helpline.

Major Medical with Wellness covers all of the aspects from above along with vaccinations, urinalysis, flea prevention, and wellness exams.

Whole Pet is an option for older pets that has the same coverage as the Major Medical Plan but with added features such as dental, alternative treatments, and behavioral treatment.

The final option is Whole Pet with Wellness which is Nationwide’s largest and most comprehensive policy. It includes all of the benefits listed above plus the option to customize your reimbursement rate between 50%, 70%, and 90%.

Nationwide provide coverage for pets of all ages, though the plans are limited for senior animals, and they tend to get much more expensive as your pet ages. With that being said, Nationwide is still one of the best options in terms of policy coverage and value for money. 

It’s also worth noting that coverage for cruciate ligament injuries is present on all plans, which are extremely uncommon in the pet insurance industry. This is one of the most common injuries that dogs suffer from, making this inclusion a big plus point for Nationwide.

Claim Process

To submit a claim, you must complete an online claim form. Simply visit the company’s website, enter your email, and fill in the form that is sent to you.

In addition to the form, you must attach an itemized bill, paid invoices, and your expenses incurred for review by the Nationwide team. You can do this via the online system by email, fax, or by mail.

Reviews take up to 30 days to complete and for reimbursement to be delivered.

Extras & Customer Support

As previously mentioned, there are 4 plans available, and 2 of these come with wellness coverage. You can also take out pet wellness without the need for a medical plan, the options are as follows:

  • Wellness Basic: $12 – $18 per month (max. annual benefit of $400)
  • Wellness Plus: $17 – $22 per month (max. annual benefit of $500)

This covers add-ons such as physical exams, deworming, microchipping, and more.

Additional information is available through variety of different means. There’s a Nationwide Pet Insurance community on Facebook page where you can find helpful advice from other members and the team. If you hold a policy with Nationwide, you will get access to their 24/7 helpline which connects you with knowledgeable veterinarians to help you with any type of query or concern. The website also has an extensive FAQ section, covering topics such as what’s covered in the plans, claims, and filing a claim.

Alternatively, if you wish to contact Nationwide Pet Insurance directly, then you can do so via telephone or mail. The support team are available 6 days a week, from 5 AM to 7 PM (PT) Monday to Friday and 7 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturday. Their customer support team are renowned for their professionalism and resolving issues in a timely manner.
