Petplan Review - Pet Insurance
Petplan is a US-based pet insurance company based out of Philadelphia, USA. It was founded in 2003 by entrepreneurs Chris and Natasha Ashton, who decided to start their own pet insurance company after they received a $5,000 veterinary bill for their cat.
Since then, Petplan has grown to have a team of over 200 employers and now provides cover to the whole of the USA and Canada, as well as the UK with their sister company, Petplan UK.
While they are not the cheapest pet insurance provider on the market, they offer a wide-range and comprehensive plan and are known for providing consistently stellar customer support reviews. Their plan allows you to alter multiple elements to suit your budget, desired policy limits, and reimbursement levels.
On top of that, Petplan offers cover for senior dogs, which is relatively uncommon in the pet insurance industry. There’s also coverage for curable pre-existing medical conditions, hereditary and chronic conditions as standard in their policies.
For pet owners that prefer to choose their own veterinary practice, then they can do so with Petplan as the company does not limit their services to a network of veterinary providers.

Application & Approval Process
To apply for coverage with Petplan, you can either call their toll-free number or fill in the online form to receive a free quote. Applications completed online will receive a 5% discount. To receive your quote, visit the Petplan website and enter your pet’s name as prompted. You will then be navigated through to the application process where you will be asked for some basic details such as:
- Pet’s type (dog or cat)
- Pet’s age
- Pet’s breed
- Zip code
If you should incur any problems, there is a live chat available on every web page with a representative ready on standby to help answer any of your queries.
Next, you will be presented with a number of quotes from different recommended levels of cover to suit a variety of budgets. To make it simple, Petplan divides the quotes into three options: Most Affordable, Most Popular, and Most Reimbursement. As you would expect, the higher the level of reimbursement, the more expensive the monthly premium.
You can choose from any of these covers, but if you prefer to have some more flexibility then select the “Customize” button and tailor the policy to your specific needs. You can choose your maximum annual payout, your annual deductible, and your level of reimbursement.
You can also add on any extra pets at this stage if you wish. However, there are no multi-pet discounts available with Petplan.
Lastly, you will be able to view a full breakdown of your coverage and your monthly premium before being directed to the payments section.
Premiums & Deductibles
Petplan’s policies come at a slightly higher price than many of their competitors. However, it is important to recognize that many of its provisions are included as standard, such as their coverage of curable pre-existing medical conditions. As mentioned, the plans are highly customizable so you can alter the maximum annual payout, annual deductible, and the level of reimbursement.
For example, a four-year-old Labrador Retriever with an unlimited maximum annual payout, $250 deductible, and a 90% reimbursement payout will cost £130.78 per month. In comparison, for the same Labrador, a maximum annual payout of $2,500 with $1,000 deductible and a 70% reimbursement payout would cost a much lower amount of $28.21.
While there are no multi-pet discounts, you do get 5% off if you purchase your policy online, which increases to 10% for military, ex-military, students, veterinary clinic staff, and businesses who offer PetPlan to their employees as a benefit.
