Application & Approval Process

It takes just a few minutes for customers to get a free quote from Pets Best. First, you will need to fill in a simple form with basic details about the pet, such as the name, age, type, gender, and breed. It is also necessary to provide basic background medical details; for instance, if the pet has ever shown symptoms of or been treated for conditions including Addison’s Disease, Cushing’s Disease, Diabetes, Cancer, Feline Leukemia or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

The second part of the form asks for details of the owner, such as your name, zip code and email address. After filling out the form, applicants are presented with a range of quotes for the different plans. There are a number of options to choose from, which are all explained below. After selecting a plan, it is possible to add an additional pet or proceed to payment. 

After purchasing insurance, there is a small waiting time before the insurance cover begins and this will vary according to the type of coverage. Following the policy effective date, the waiting times are:

  • Accidents: 3 days
  • Illnesses: 14 days
  • Cruciate ligament conditions: 6 months
  • Routine care plans: If added, this coverage can be used on the policy effective date

Premiums & Deductibles

The premiums at Pets Best start at $9 for dogs and average between $35 and $58 per month for comprehensive accident and illness coverage. Cat insurance is slightly cheaper starting at $6 per month and with an average between $22 and $46 per month for more complete plans. Importantly, the premiums do not increase based upon claims filing history, but they are likely to increase as the pet ages. The company offers a 5% multi-pet discount and there is also a 5% discount for active or retired military personnel. 

All of the plans are highly flexible and provide a choice of deductible and reimbursement levels, which will affect the price. The Annual Limit can be set at Unlimited or $5,000, the Annual Deductible can be $50, $100, $200, $250, $500 or $1,000, and the Reimbursement Level can be 70%, 80% or 90%.

Plan Options & Coverage

At Pets Best, there are three basic Accident and Illness plans: Essential, Plus and Elite. The plans do not provide worldwide coverage, rather they cover the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. The cost of these plans will depend on a number of factors, such as the pet’s age and medical history.

The Essential Plan will cover accidents, illnesses, cancer, hereditary conditions, emergency care, surgery and Rx Meds. 

The Plus Plan includes everything listed in the Essential Plan, along with accident and illness exam fees covered. 

The Elite Plan features all of the above in addition to coverage of rehabilitative treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, and more. 

It is also possible to add Routine Care options to the above plans. The Essential Wellness add-on costs $16 per month and pays up to the following limits each year with no deductible: 

  • Spay/Neuter — Teeth Cleaning – $0
  • Rabies – $15
  • Flea/Tick Prevention – $50
  • Heartworm Prevention – $30
  • Vaccination/Titer – $30
  • Wellness Exam – $50
  • Heartworm test or FELV screen – $25
  • Blood, fecal, parasite exam – $50
  • Microchip – $20
  • Urinalysis or ERD – $15
  • Deworming – $20

The Best Wellness add-on costs $26 per month and pays up to the following limits each year with no deductible: 

  • Spay/Neuter — Teeth Cleaning – $150
  • Rabies – $15
  • Flea/Tick Prevention – $65
  • Heartworm Prevention – $30
  • Vaccination/Titer – $40
  • Wellness Exam – $50
  • Heartworm test or FELV screen – $30

  • Deworming – $20

Pets Best also offers Accident–Only coverage. This is the cheapest option and has a $10,000 annual limit with a $250 deductible and 90% reimbursement. It covers the treatment of accidents, like broken bones, foreign body ingestion or being hit by a moving vehicle.

Claim Process

The claims process at Pets Best is very straightforward. Claims can be filed online from desktop or mobile devices and it is possible to set up direct deposit to receive the money straight to your bank account or request the company to pay the vet directly. Claims may also be submitted through email, fax and post, but the web portal is by the far the easiest and most efficient method. 

When submitting a claim, it is important to include original paid invoices, proof of payment, and a signed claim form. It is recommended to ask a member of staff at the vets to help complete the diagnosis and veterinarian notes section of the claim form. As long as the paper work is complete, the process is impressively fast with reimbursements often carried out within a week. 

Extras & Customer Support

An excellent feature of Pets Best is the pre-approval hotline for claims over $500. It allows customers to find out quickly if something is covered by their insurance plan before making a decision. 

The Pets Best customer support team are available from 5 AM to 7 PM (MT) on Mondays to Fridays and from 6 AM to 2 PM (MT) on Saturdays.
