About Total Home Protection

Total Home Protection is a relatively new company, it was founded in 2016 but has quickly gained an admirable reputation. It offers customers a selection of highly flexible plans that cover the majority of essential home appliances and systems at a very reasonable cost. The company stands out for its coverage and flat-rate service fee of just $60.

Total Home Protection is committed to providing its customers with the best possible service and this is reflected in their easy claims procedure and technician response times. All contractors are pre-screened and fully insured, and a customer feedback system ensures that Total Home Protection is aware of those who do not uphold the company’s high standards.

As a testament to the company’s dedication to customers and hard work, in 2019, it was nominated for the Home Warranty Insurance Awards and it won a medal in the Best Summary Rating category.

Price & Plan Options

Total Home Protection offers two basic plans; Gold and Platinum, and then a number of optional add-ons. They do not advertise prices on the website as the cost will depend on the size of the property and location. However, it is possible to get a free quote online or over the telephone. The plans last a year and new customers will be offered one month for free. While the only way to get an accurate price is to get a quote, it seems that average prices start at around $500 for a 13-month contract. Customers will be contacted shortly before the plan expires to discuss renewal options.

The Gold plan covers plumbing systems, plumbing stoppage, water heaters, whirlpool bathtubs, electrical systems, ovens/ranges/stoves, cooktops, sump pumps, built-in microwaves, dishwashers, garbage disposal units, trash compactors, ductwork, garage door openers, and ceiling and exhaust fans. The Premium plan adds to the Gold plan air conditioning systems (2 units), heating systems (2 units), refrigerators, clothes washers, and clothes dryers.

As mentioned, there are a number of optional add-ons. For an additional fee, either plan will also cover:

  • Pools/Spas
  • Limited Roof Leaks
  • Central Vacuums
  • Sump Pumps
  • Well Pumps
  • Septic Systems
  • Septic Pumping
  • Second Refrigerator
  • Standalone Freezers
  • Water Softeners
  • Refrigerator Ice Makers
  • Free-standing Ice Makers
  • Additional Air Conditioning
  • Additional Heating
  • Additional Water Heaters
  • Additional Garage Door Openers

Professional Contractor Network

Total Home Protection works with a number of prescreened and local technicians, enabling them to provide customers with rapid and excellent service. The company has very strict conditions that contractors must fulfill before working with them. The contractors must be licensed for their trade, have at least $500,000 in general liability insurance, at least $250,000 per occurrence, and if they are self-employed, they must provide proof of Workers Compensation Insurance or a waiver. The contractors must also have auto insurance with limits of $250,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence. The contractors are continually monitored and graded on their performances through a customer satisfaction survey program so Total Home Protection are able to ensure that they uphold the highest standards.

Claims Process

Total Home Protection have ensured that submitting a claim is always straightforward. Customers can call the claims department or file a claim online at any time. All that is required is details of the faulty appliance. It is important to note that claims must be submitted within one day of the fault occurring. However, as the service line is open 24/7 and claims can be submitted online, this should not be a problem.

After submitting a claim, a contractor will be hired within two business days, or four days over weekends and holidays, to come and make an assessment. If the contractor determines that the problem is covered by the Total Home Protection plan, then they will carry out the repair work or order any necessary parts. One of the most attractive features of Total Home Protection is its flat service fee of $60 for all callouts, which is far lower than many rival home warranty providers. After the work has been carried out, customers will receive their claim within 30 days.

Repair & Replacement Policies

Total Home Protection guarantees its repair parts for 90 days and labor for 30 days. If something goes wrong within these periods, then they will make the necessary additional repairs free of charge.

The exact coverage will depend upon the plan chosen and full details can be found in the contract and in the site’s terms and conditions. Before choosing a plan, it is possible to see exactly what is and isn’t covered. In general, the company will cover faults caused by normal wear and tear (which is decided by the contractor), but they will not cover pre-existing conditions or any properties that are used for commercial purposes.

For example, in the case of a clothes dryer, the plans will cover all components and parts with the exception of venting, lint screens, knobs and dials, doors, door seals and hinges, glass, leveling and balancing, noise without a related mechanical failure, damage to clothing, conditions of airflow restriction due to a lack of maintenance and/or clogged lint screens.

A similar example is the built-in microwaves. The plans cover all mechanical components and parts with the exception of doors, hinges, handles, glass, knobs, lights, clocks (unless they affect the cooking function of the unit), meat probe assemblies, rotisseries, racks and trays, interior linings, arcing, and portable or countertop units.

It is possible to find the full details for each type of appliance and system on the Total Home Protection website. In general, the coverage is very fair and it is comparable to that offered by other home warranty suppliers. However, if a customer is worried about a particular type of appliance then it is possible to view exact coverage details in the site’s terms and conditions and this way, customers can avoid future disappointments or disputes with the company.

Customer Support & Benefits

The Total Home Protection customer service team can be reached 24/7 via a toll-free telephone number, an online form, and email. They are happy to deal with all types of queries and concerns and will do their best to provide answers as quickly as possible. There is also a small but helpful FAQ section on the company website and it is always worth checking this before contacting the company.

Total Home Protection also runs a blog that contains a variety of helpful articles for homeowners. The blog is divided into Community, DIY, Home Maintenance, Home Repairs, and Homeowner Reviews, and each has a number of interesting posts that are worth exploring. There is also a separate section on the site that is dedicated to Maintenance Tips, providing advice for home upkeep during different stages of the year.
